Jo Asgeir Lie is a versatile accordionist with a broad musical background that spanning folk, classical, and improvised music. He has performed extensively as both an ensemble and studio musician across a wide range of genres, contributing to more than 40 recordings.

Inspiration from folk, jazz og classical music

Jo Asgeir's compositional expression is inspired by Norwegian and Swedish folk music, but he also draws inspiration from jazz ans classical music.

His production spans a wide range, including theatre music, larger and smaller solo words, chamber music pieces, choral works, and liturgical music. 

He is also a much-used arranger and had arranged music for a number of ensembles.

Jo Asgeir Lie has collaborated with a wide range of Norwegian musicians, and appears on albums with artists such as Ole Paus, Stein Torleif Bjella and Jonas Fjeld.

Together with long-standing Ål cantor Audun Flaen, he played a key role in developing the Ål folk music mass into a work now performed across Norway.

The mass has also been released on CD.

Kvarts

The folk music group Kvarts forms the core of Jo Asgeir's performing career. Established in 1998, the group has toured both nationally and internationally ever since. With Kvarts, he has released seven productions to date, two of which have won the Spellemannprisen. In 2024 they recieved Folkelarmprisen.

Kvarts has collaborated with numerous musicians and enjoyed a successful partnership with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra (KORK). The quartet has also played with Kristiansand symfoniorkester and Trondheimsolistene. The quartet has also had musical collaborations with a wide range of musicians over the years, such as Jonas Fjeld and Henning Kvitnes. Together with the group, Jo Asgeir has also composed theatre music and created commissioned works for several festivals.
